DVD of the Carlton years

Our resident photographer, Peter Simpson, has put together a beautiful collection of photographs on a DVD with accompanying music. This is a lovely memorial of our time in this stage of our parish life. It is available for a small donation to cover costs, from the Parish Secretary.

Autumn study group

This is a good time to be thinking about study groups again. We shall be looking at some of the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer ( Life Together (SCM-Press 1949) and The Cost of Discipleship (SCM Press 1959)) and Martin Laird (Into the Silent  Land, The Practice of Contemplation ( DLT 2006 ) ).
Proposed dates are as follows, subject to confirmation nearer the time.

Sept 16th - Life Together, Bonhoeffer, Chapter 3 - The Day Alone and Martin Laird, Chapter 3, The Call to Prayer.

Oct 14th. The Beatitudes - The Cost of Discipleship, Bonhoeffer, Chapter 6.

November 11th. Salt of the Earth - The Cost., Chapter 7

December 16th ( date to be confirmed). Becoming - The way Forward.

Meetings will usually take place at Father David’s house at 7.30pm.

Parish discussion group

This group meets on a Wednesday evening in church, and the next meeting will be Weds 10th June. We had such a good discussion about Resurrection last time that we would like to continue with this theme, asking ourselves,  How are we living in the light of this resurrection, practically, in detail, in our daily lives? All are welcome to join us. The session will begin with prayers at 7.30pm.

For directions and further details please see any member of the Parish Council or Father David.

On the previous day, Saturday 18th July, there will also be a pilgrimage to Crowland, organised by Fr Dennis in Doncaster, which people may like to consider joining too. Further details may be found here.

Study Group 20th May, 7.30pm

The Study Group continues to meet, usually on the second Wednesday of each month, in the Parish Rooms at the church in Carlton, 7.30- 9.00 p.m.

In the last two sessions (February and March) we have been discussing the topic of Death, using Jessica Rose’s article, ‘Death in the midst of life’, The Messenger 8 (November 2008), 19-29 and Fr Alexander Schmemann’s little book, O Death Where Is Thy Sting? (St Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 2003), as starting-points. The discussions have been fruitful and thought-provoking.

At the next study group (20th May) Mary will lead a discussion of ‘Resurrection’.

****************************************

Parish Meal and discussion group

In the Acts of the Apostles we read of the early Christians: ‘They devoted themselves to the Apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.’ (Acts 3: 42).

It would be good for all of us to know more of the Apostles’ teachings, which form the basis of our Orthodox faith, and to know why we perform certain acts when we are together in Church and how we pray in our homes.

Therefore, beginning on the FIRST SUNDAY IN FEBRUARY, a more substantial meal will be provided after the Liturgy (the breaking of the bread and the prayers) during our fellowship in the Parish Room. Then there will be a time for the Apostles' teaching and discussion of various topics. PLEASE TRY TO MAKE THIS EXTRA COMMITMENT. We pray for God's blessing.

Please let Father David know of anything you would particularly like to discuss or learn.
