Stop Press – Asia Pacific Appeal
Please consider including a note about the current crisis in Indonesia and The Philippines in your Church notices, pew sheets and prayers this Sunday. Christian Aid partners are already on the ground working to help the people effected by these disasters, but they need your support to continue this vital work. The situation is changing daily, so please take a look at www.christianaid.org.uk/emergencies/current/asia-pacific-appeal for the latest information.

‘Even foreigners drink it!’
Community taps for Nicaragua cost £45 – please help to buy some! Everyone needs clean water to stay alive. Christian Aid partner, Community Movement of Matagalpa, works to improve health and sanitation in 20 communities. According to head of MCM Sergio Saenz López, a community water tap gives water so clean that ‘even foreigners drink it’. A single water tap can make a huge difference to people’s lives, bringing fresh water to an entire village. A gift like this just keeps on giving.

Nottingham Big Christmas Sing
6th December 2009, 3pm
This promises to be a wonderful service of celebration in anticipation of Christmas – a service in which young and old, children and families can share joy and laughter, music and singing. The celebration will be led by Paul Heppleston, an associate of the Iona Community, and takes place at St Peter’s Church (next to Marks and Spencer) in the centre of Nottingham.
Would your children’s school or a group from your church or community like this opportunity to come together and celebrate? We‘d love to hear from you. More details from Mary Anderson at the Ashby office, manders@christian-aid.org.
Christian Aid invites us to join in a national “Big Christmas Sing” over the weekend of December 11-13.
In homes or in the workplace, in schools, churches or the local community people who love singing or listening to singing are coming together to share their music and raise funds for the charity and its work amongst the poorest of our world.
The annual carol service is a well-loved event, but the Big Christmas Sing could also include themed evenings – a Dickensian evening with appropriate Victorian ditties; songs from the musicals, especially those with a snowy or Christmas feel (does anyone remember White Horse Inn?); even a karaoke evening of past Christmas hits with work colleagues.
For a special occasion they suggest a venue with a central location and the involvement of community groups and organisations performing in concert style. Fundraising comes from selling tickets, charging an entry fee for ambitious performers and holding a raffle for donated Christmas goodies like home-baked biscuits, a pudding or cake or homemade sweets.
A small pack is available to help with ideas and tips for organisation. To order a pack, please contact the Christian Aid office in Ashby de la Zouch on 01530 417522 or by e-mail at ashby@christian-aid.org
Advent Footsteps
Looking for something a little different for Advent this year? Well, Christian Aid in the East Midlands are now distributing these popular calendars alongside the 2009 Christmas Appeal.
‘Oh Broken town of Bethlehem’ focuses on the work of the YMCA in Bethlehem. It tells the story of Noor Rabia – a young boy given hope for the future after a devastating injury.
Every day in Advent you are invited to place a silver coin on the footsteps leading to Bethlehem to support the work of the YMCA.
This calendar has been produced for many years in the North West of England and last year raised over £8000. It has proven popular with people of all ages and is often placed next to the more traditional chocolate calendar.
If you would like to order a calendar or any other Christmas materials, please get in touch with the East Midlands office ashby@christian-aid.org or 01530 417522.
Christmas
This year Christian Aid’s Christmas Appeal is focusing on Bethlehem
Today in Bethlehem hope is in short supply. Many Israeli and Palestinian children caught in the literal and emotional cross-fire of the conflict in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, have lived a childhood of pain and fear. For Palestinian children living in impoverished areas such as the West Bank, the struggle can be extreme.
But hope is not lost. Poverty can and must end – everywhere – and support for the work of Christian Aid’s partner organisations around the world will enable them to keep going until it does.
Support Christian Aid’s Christmas appeal, and focus with them on the hope brought by their partner, the YMCA, based in Bethlehem.
For more information and to download a magazine article all about the appeal, please visit www.christianaid.org.uk/getinvolved/christmas/christmas-resources.
